Black mold in bedroom closet: DIY removal or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing behind the winter clothes we just packed away. I'm really worried about my family's health, especially my toddler who sleeps in the next room. What is the most effective way to safely remove this ourselves, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Assess the size first. If the patch is smaller than a square foot and confined to a non-porous surface like painted drywall, DIY is often feasible. For larger areas, hidden growth, or if anyone has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to determine the full extent.
For a small DIY job, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide spray. Dry it completely within 24-48 hours using a fan; our humidity makes re-growth almost certain without thorough drying. However, the location behind stored clothes is a concern. Mold on the surface often indicates a moisture source behind the wall, possibly from AC condensation line leaks or envelope penetration—both common in villas here. DIY cleaning only addresses the visible symptom, not the root cause. Given the proximity to a toddler’s room and the potential for hidden spread within the wall cavity, a professional assessment is the safest course. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls and can identify if the AC system is spreading spores. Reputable firms here provide a lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. |
