Is JVC bathroom mold causing our cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I’ve started getting headaches every time I shower. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. I’m really worried this is what’s making us sick. How dangerous is this type of mold and what’s the fastest way to get it professionally cleaned here?

Black mold growth under bathroom sealant is a common issue in Dubai apartments, particularly in humid areas like JVC, and it is very likely contributing to your family's symptoms. The persistent moisture from showers, combined with year-round AC use that creates temperature differentials and condensation, creates an ideal environment for mold. The coughing and headaches are a classic response to inhaling mold spores and mycotoxins released into the air, especially in the enclosed, steamy space of a bathroom.

For a case this severe, where mold is growing unseen behind materials, a simple DIY clean is insufficient and can aerosolize more spores. The fastest and most effective solution is professional remediation. In Dubai, look for a DHA-approved or certified provider. They will first conduct an air quality test to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which confirms the health risk. The remediation process itself involves isolating the area, physically removing the contaminated sealant and any affected underlying materials, and using HEPA vacuuming and air scrubbing to remove all spores from the air. They will then apply a antimicrobial treatment to the area before reinstalling new, high-quality sealant.

To prevent rapid recurrence, which is common here, ensure the bathroom's ventilation fan is working effectively and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help control the humidity that mold needs to grow.
