Black mold on bedroom wall: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, I'm really worried it's mold. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call our building management first?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the wall's exterior-facing position, this is almost certainly mold growth from condensation. Your first step is to inform your building management in writing. Under Dubai's strata laws, the responsibility for repairing the building envelope—like the external wall and its insulation—falls on them, as the issue likely originates from outside.
For a small area, a DIY approach can be a temporary measure. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the surface with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, but avoid bleach as it only bleaches the surface and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, this only addresses the symptom. The root cause is a thermal bridge or inadequate insulation in that wall, causing condensation whenever your AC is running. Given the spread you've described, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to quantify the dampness within the wall and take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to confirm the species. This is crucial for understanding the health risk and proving to building management the severity of the issue. Without fixing the underlying condensation problem, the mold will return. A proper remediation plan should address both the visible growth and the hidden moisture source. |
