Is black mold in bathroom urgent with a newborn?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this damp, musty smell for the last couple of months, but after the recent humidity, I just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. We’ve got a newborn at home and I’m starting to get really worried about the air quality. How urgently do I need to get a professional cleaning company out here to deal with this?

Yes, this is urgent. With a newborn at home, you should treat this as a priority. The damp, musty smell confirms active microbial growth, and the visible black spots are a clear sign it has progressed. Newborns have developing respiratory and immune systems, making them far more susceptible to the irritants and potential allergens that mould releases into the air.

In Dubai's high humidity, bathroom mould is common due to condensation and steam from showers. The grout is porous, so the visible spots are often just the surface manifestation of a deeper issue within the wall. Simply scrubbing it with bleach is a temporary fix that doesn't address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root structures) growing inside.

For a case with a newborn and widespread growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the mould species to assess the specific risk level and use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—often a leaking pipe behind the tile, failed grout sealing, or inadequate ventilation. Ensure any company you hire provides documented before-and-after evidence of remediation, not just a visual clean. In the interim, increase bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wiping down wet surfaces to reduce immediate moisture.
