Is urgent doctor visit needed for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out their bedroom wardrobe today to check behind it and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall, probably from a slow AC leak. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I'm panicking a bit. How urgent is it to get them checked by a doctor and should we stay somewhere else tonight?

First, move your children to a different, well-ventilated room immediately and keep them away from the affected area. The urgency of a doctor's visit depends on their symptoms and pre-existing conditions.

For persistent coughing and irritation, a visit to your family doctor or pediatrician is strongly recommended. They can assess if the symptoms are an allergic reaction or something more serious, especially if your children have a history of asthma or other respiratory issues. The doctor can provide treatment to relieve the coughing and may advise on any necessary tests.

Given the climate here, with high humidity and constant AC use, this scenario is unfortunately common. The condensation from AC units often leads to hidden mold growth behind furniture and in closets, exactly as you've found. That black patch indicates a significant moisture issue, likely from a slow leak as you suspected.

For the mold itself, this requires professional remediation. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores into your home's air. The remediation process involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and addressing the root cause—the AC leak. After remediation, an independent indoor air quality test, conducted by a company with its own microbiology lab, is the only way to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level. This is a serious household health issue that needs to be addressed properly to ensure your family's long-term well-being.
