Black mold spreading behind wardrobe: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s gotten worse because we keep the AC off during the day. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should we call a professional company right away?

Black mold spreading behind a wardrobe in JVC is a common issue here, primarily driven by our high humidity and condensation from AC units cycling on and off. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully assess the extent. The wall needs to breathe.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and let it dry completely. However, simply cleaning the surface often fails because the moisture problem remains. The mold is likely growing due to a combination of poor air circulation behind the furniture and the constant humidity, which is exacerbated when the AC is off during the day.

Given that the spots are spreading, this indicates an active moisture issue that DIY cleaning won't resolve long-term. The mold might also have penetrated porous materials like drywall or plaster. In Dubai's climate, this requires identifying and correcting the source of the moisture, which is often condensation from AC ducts in the wall or a lack of dehumidification.

For a spreading infestation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of the dampness. Reputable companies in the UAE should then provide a protocol that includes containment to prevent spores from spreading, safe removal of affected materials if necessary, and applying EPA-approved biocides. Crucially, they will diagnose and advise on the humidity control fix—this is the key to preventing recurrence. Always request before-and-after lab test results to verify the species and that the treatment was successful.
