Best way to remove black mold in Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black fuzzy patches I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the AC condensation. What's the best way to get rid of this properly in Dubai, and should I call our building management first or a professional cleaning company?

Black mold growth behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and AC condensation creating ideal conditions for it. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part bleach to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the area is well-ventilated.

However, since your children are coughing and the mold is behind a large furniture piece where the full extent is hidden, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mold you see is often just the surface growth; the root structure can penetrate deeper into the wall. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem.

In Dubai, building management is typically responsible for the structure, including external walls and common area AC systems. For an interior wall issue like this, it's still worth notifying them first, as it could indicate a pre-existing water leak or insulation problem they need to fix. They may conduct their own inspection.

For proper remediation, a specialist will contain the area, use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial solutions to remove the colony, and identify the moisture source—which is critical to prevent immediate recurrence. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a culture test to confirm the mold type and verify it has been effectively removed post-remediation, which is valuable for peace of mind with children involved.
