How to permanently stop mold in closet for good?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah. It's on the back wall and I scrub it with bleach every few months, but after this last round of humidity, it's worse than ever. What's the best long-term solution to actually stop it from growing back for good?

Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the root cause, which is almost always excess moisture. In Dubai's climate, that closet wall is likely a cold surface from an adjacent AC duct or external wall, creating constant condensation—a perfect breeding ground for mold.

First, identify the moisture source. A professional inspection with a thermal camera can pinpoint the exact condensation point, often hidden behind the wall. For a permanent fix, you'll need to eliminate that temperature differential. This usually involves improving insulation around the cold surface or rerouting the AC ductwork to prevent the cold spot.

Until the root cause is fixed, increase air circulation. Leave the closet door open regularly and consider a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel inside. For severe, recurring growth, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is crucial information if your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms.

Ultimately, stopping it for good requires a building science solution, not just cleaning. A proper remediation plan from a company with microbiology expertise will address the moisture source, remove the established colony with HEPA vacuants, and apply antimicrobial coatings to prevent regrowth.
