How to permanently remove black modl in JVC bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What's the best way to get rid of this for good without having to break the bank on a professional?

That black spot pattern behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common in JVC bedrooms. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and feed mould growth, especially with the recent high humidity. Permanently removing it requires addressing both the mould and the moisture source.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A simple solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover spray applied with a scrub brush is often effective. Bleach is not recommended as it only surface-treats and can worsen indoor air quality. After scrubbing, dry the area completely with a fan.

However, simply cleaning will not be permanent. You must stop the condensation. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe down the wall and the back of the furniture regularly to remove moisture. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%.

If the mould returns quickly after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, the issue is likely more serious. The mould may have penetrated the wallboard or there could be a hidden leak. In these cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the exact species and moisture source, as improper handling can spread spores throughout your home.
