Black mold in Dubai closet: call management or specialist?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's gotten into the walls. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call the building management or find a specialist myself to get it tested and removed?

Contact building management first. Dubai landlords are typically responsible for structural issues, and this could stem from a leak in the building envelope or faulty external waterproofing, especially after humid periods. They should send their maintenance team to investigate the source of the moisture.
While you wait, avoid disturbing the area. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and only bleaches the pigment, leaving the root structure intact. The high humidity here means mold can penetrate porous materials like drywall and fabric if it's been present for a while. If the building management's solution is superficial (e.g., just wiping it down) or if the moisture source isn't identified and fixed, then hiring a specialist is the next step. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping and often an air or tape-lift sample sent to a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is crucial, as what's called "black mold" can range from relatively benign Cladosporium to more problematic Stachybotrys, and the remediation protocol differs. For your winter clothes, a specialist can advise on cleaning, but expect that porous items like leather or down may be difficult to salvage completely. The goal is to find and eliminate the moisture source first; without that, any cleaning is a temporary fix. |
