Urgent: black mold behind wardrobe affecting kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. It’s been extra humid lately and I'm really worried about how quickly this can affect our health. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should address this immediately. Black mould growth behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use, especially on cold exterior walls. The proximity to your bedroom and your children's symptoms make this a priority.

For any visible mould over about one square foot, and especially with health symptoms present, professional assessment is recommended. The coughing could be from irritation caused by mould spores now circulating in your air. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. Keep the area isolated and the room well-ventilated until it can be inspected.

A certified inspector can identify the mould species through lab testing to confirm its type and potential health risks, assess the moisture source (likely condensation from the wall/AC), and provide a proper remediation protocol. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mould removal to ensure it is done safely and effectively. This is not typically a DIY situation when health is already being affected.
