How to stop mold in humid kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has started to feel really damp, especially on the walls behind their closets. I’ve noticed a few small black spots forming in the corners since the weather got more humid last month. We run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to be helping. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading and prevent it from coming back completely?

The dampness and black spots behind the closets are classic signs of condensation mold, very common in Dubai villas during humid months. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot where moisture condenses, especially with constant AC creating a temperature differential.
First, address the immediate problem. For small spots, clean the area with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear a mask and gloves. However, this only removes visible growth, not the root cause. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation and reduce humidity. Move the closets at least a few inches away from the wall to allow air to flow behind them. Ensure the room’s AC vents are not blocked and are set to a consistent, reasonable temperature—around 22-23°C—as excessively cold settings can increase condensation. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid nights, can help measurably reduce moisture levels. Since the mold is already visible and in a child’s bedroom, a professional inspection is wise to assess potential spread inside the wall cavity. They can use moisture meters to find the exact dampness source and recommend if further remediation is needed. For persistent issues, a lab test can identify the mold type, which is important for health concerns and targeting the correct remediation method. |
