How to safely remove mold and prevent dampness permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black stuff I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we moved the furniture for cleaning. The wall feels a bit damp and it's on the side that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. What's the best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, how can I stop the dampness from coming back for good?

The damp wall behind your sofa suggests a condensation or moisture intrusion issue common in Dubai villas. That black growth is likely mold, and given the location and your children's symptoms, it should be addressed carefully.

For safe removal, first keep children and pets away from the area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar or soapy water solution to suppress spores, then wipe it away with a damp cloth. Discard the cloth immediately in a sealed bag. This is only for small, surface-level patches.

However, cleaning alone is a temporary fix. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Arabian Ranches, this is often due to thermal bridging. Your exterior villa wall heats up in the sun, while the interior is cooled by AC, creating a cold spot where condensation forms inside, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow. This perpetual dampness will cause mold to return.

Permanent prevention requires fixing the building envelope. An infrared thermal imaging inspection can pinpoint the exact cold spots and moisture paths. Solutions often involve improving exterior wall insulation or applying internal vapour barriers to break the condensation cycle. Simply repainting with anti-mold paint is ineffective if the underlying dampness isn't resolved.

For a case with health symptoms and recurring dampness, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to diagnose the root cause. They can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold type and provide a targeted remediation and prevention plan.
