Black mold in bedroom: DIY or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call our building management in Jumeirah first?

Start by moving the shoe boxes and any other items away from the wall to allow air circulation. The location on an exterior wall in Jumeirah is a classic sign of condensation, where the hot, humid outdoor air meets the cooler interior air-conditioned surface.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. The wall’s interior could be damp from a minor condensation issue or a more significant leak within the building envelope.

In Dubai, building management is typically responsible for the structural integrity of exterior walls and common plumbing lines. It is absolutely appropriate to notify them first, especially before any DIY attempt that could inadvertently damage property or obscure the evidence they need to investigate. They can check for potential leaks from adjacent bathrooms or insulation flaws causing condensation.

Given Dubai’s high humidity, if the mould returns after cleaning or the patch is larger, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and species. This is crucial for an effective, long-term solution.
