How to remove black mold in humid Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building and the room has felt more humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Black mold growth in closets is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation on exterior walls. Your situation—growth on an outside-facing wall with persistent humidity—suggests a moisture issue that must be addressed first.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a dedicated mold remover. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root problem. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards.

However, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix. The constant humidity indicates a deeper issue, likely condensation from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. This will cause the mold to return. The most effective approach is to identify and control the moisture source. This may require improving room ventilation, using a dehumidifier, or inspecting for potential leaks in the external building envelope.

For recurring or widespread growth, professional assessment is recommended. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness and take air or surface samples. Lab analysis is the only way to confirm the mold type and its potential health risks, which is particularly important for households with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. Remediation companies with proper certifications can then contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and apply treatments to prevent regrowth.
