How to prevent mold in UAE bedroom humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Jumeirah villa. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this after the recent humidity. I’m worried it’s making us sick and I want to stop it for good. What’s the most effective way to prevent mold from coming back in our bedroom, especially with the UAE’s humid climate?

Black spots behind furniture in a humid climate like Jumeirah are a common trigger for respiratory irritation, including persistent coughing in children. The most effective prevention is a multi-step approach targeting moisture control, which is the root cause.

First, address the immediate problem. The visible mold should be professionally assessed and remediated. For a villa that's two years old, the issue could be a minor condensation leak from an AC pipe or a more significant breach in the building envelope. A certified inspection can identify the exact moisture source behind the wall.

To prevent recurrence, focus on humidity control. Keep your air conditioner running consistently to maintain indoor relative humidity below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. Ensure all AC drain lines and drip pans are clear and flowing properly, as clogged drains are a primary cause of indoor moisture. Increase air circulation behind large furniture; even a small gap between the dresser and wall can make a significant difference. Consider using a dedicated dehumidifier in the bedroom during the most humid months, especially if the room is large or has poor airflow.

For long-term protection, verify your villa’s ventilation system is balanced and that there are no leaks from bathrooms or the kitchen creating cross-contamination. After remediation, a post-clearance test from an independent lab provides documented proof that the environment is safe and the prevention measures are working.
