Is bedroom black mold causing my husband's cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. My husband has had a persistent dry cough and headaches for the past month that won't go away, and we're starting to get really worried. Is this type of black mold in the bedroom likely to be the cause of his symptoms, and what's the first step we should take to get it properly tested and removed here in Dubai?

It is very possible the mold is contributing to your husband's symptoms. Many species of black mold produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are respiratory irritants, and a persistent dry cough and headaches are common reactions, especially in a confined space like a bedroom.
The first step is to identify the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an AC unit, a small leak in the roof or pipe, or humidity trapped from an en-suite bathroom. The mold will return if the source isn't fixed. For a patch that size and given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent, as it may have spread inside the wall cavity. Do not attempt to remove it yourself by scrubbing or spraying bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. A proper remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safe removal of affected materials. For testing, a lab culture is needed to confirm the species, as "black mold" is a broad term. Stachybotrys chartarum is the most concerning type, but others like Aspergillus or Cladosporium are also common here and can cause significant irritation. A reputable local company with its own microbiology lab can provide an accurate identification and a clear remediation protocol based on the results, which is the standard for addressing health-related cases. |
