Black mold in Dubai shower: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed black mold spreading along the grout in the master bathroom shower. It's worse in the corners and has a really strong, damp smell. I'm worried it's behind the tiles. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company for an inspection and quote? What's a realistic price range for a professional mold remediation job for a shower here?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from showers combined with year-round AC use, which can create the damp, stagnant conditions mold thrives in.

For a small, surface-level patch on grout, a DIY approach can be effective. Use a dedicated mold remover (not just bleach, as it only removes the surface color) and scrub thoroughly. Ensure the area is completely dry after and improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan longer after showers.

However, the strong damp smell and concern it's behind the tiles are significant red flags. This suggests the mold has likely penetrated the porous grout and may be growing on the wall substrate behind. In this case, DIY cleaning will only be temporary. The root cause is internal moisture that needs to be professionally addressed.

For a villa in Jumeirah with a suspected subsurface issue, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity. Remediation costs are not fixed; they depend entirely on the extent of the damage. A simple surface clean is one thing, but if tiles need removal and the wall structure requires treatment, the scope and price will be higher. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that explains the full extent of the problem and the proposed solution. A reputable company will provide documented before-and-after evidence of remediation, not just cleaning.
