How to safely clean mold behind furniture myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past couple of weeks, and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled out their big toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy patches on the wall behind it. We had that minor leak during the heavy rain last month and I guess the wall never fully dried out. What's the safest way to clean this up myself without exposing my family to more spores?

Stop all DIY cleaning immediately if anyone has respiratory issues like that persistent cough. With visible growth and a known leak, this requires professional assessment to identify the moisture source and the mould species. Your children's symptoms are a significant red flag.

For a small patch (under one square foot), personal safety is the priority. Isolate the area: keep everyone, especially the children, out of the room. Seal the area with plastic sheeting if possible. You must wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Open windows for cross-ventilation, but close the AC vents to prevent spores from circulating through the ductwork.

Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach; it only removes surface colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Lightly mist the mouldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and seal all cleaning materials in a plastic bag for disposal.

However, scraving the surface does not address the mould inside the drywall or the underlying moisture problem. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation, the wall cavity likely remains damp. This growth will almost certainly return without a professional-grade drying process and addressing the hidden moisture source.

Given the health symptoms and the size of the affected area (a wall behind furniture suggests it's larger than it first appears), a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the damage and recommend a remediation plan that includes containment and air scrubbing to protect your family during the process.
