How to safely remove mold behind furniture in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been really humid lately and I think it’s mold. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely without having to move all our furniture out?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to assess the full extent and allow the area to dry. In Dubai's high humidity, mold thrives on cold walls behind furniture where condensation forms and air doesn't circulate.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated space. Scrub the area gently with a soft brush to avoid spreading spores, then wipe dry. Use a dehumidifier or your AC on dry mode in the room for several days afterwards to remove all residual moisture from the air and wall. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or you see fuzzy growth, this indicates a more serious moisture issue. In these cases, professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the source—which could be a hidden pipe leak or condensation from AC ducts—and to conduct safe, contained remediation. DIY cleaning in such scenarios often disturbs the mold colony, releasing a large number of spores and potentially spreading the problem throughout the home. To prevent recurrence, keep furniture at least a few inches away from exterior walls to promote air circulation. Regularly check behind large items, especially during the more humid summer months, and maintain your AC unit to ensure it is effectively removing humidity from your indoor air. |
