Can I clean black mold with bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I've started noticing these small black spots along the bottom of the wall near the AC vent. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or plaster, as it only removes surface discoloration while leaving the mold's root structure intact. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with condensation from AC units, mold often grows deep within building materials.

Given the location near the AC vent and the recent humidity spike, this is a strong indicator of a moisture source that needs professional diagnosis. A proper inspection identifies the mold type and, more critically, locates the underlying water issue—be it a condensation line leak, poor insulation causing thermal bridging, or an external seepage problem common in some older villas. Without fixing the source, the mold will return quickly.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean with a dedicated mold remover, but wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, since this is in a bedroom and recurring, a professional assessment is advised to safeguard your indoor air quality and ensure the wall's integrity isn't compromised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see.
