Safest way to clean black mold with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found a patch of black fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira and I'm worried the humidity from the AC might be making it worse. What's the safest way to clean this up myself without risking their health?

For a small patch (under one square foot) behind the wardrobe, you can clean it yourself safely. The constant AC use in Deira creates high humidity and condensation, which is a perfect environment for this type of growth. First, keep the kids out of the room and ensure good ventilation by opening a window if possible.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the mouldy area—do not oversaturate the wall. Let the vinegar solution sit for an hour, then scrub the area with a stiff brush. Wipe it clean with damp cloths, disposing of the cleaning materials immediately in a sealed bag. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can release harmful fumes into the enclosed space. The underlying moisture and mould roots often remain. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or run the AC on a drier, cooler setting to keep humidity below 60% and prevent rapid regrowth. Given the pre-existing coughing symptoms and the age of the building, this visible patch is likely part of a larger issue. Mould spores travel through AC systems and wall cavities. A professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the problem and identify the species, as some types common in Dubai's climate can cause persistent respiratory irritation. |
