Black mold on bedroom wall - first step to check?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah. I'm really worried it's mold, especially with the AC always running. What's the first step I should take to get this properly checked and cleaned?

Your first step is to identify the moisture source, as mold cannot grow without it. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an over-chilled AC unit meeting the humid outdoor air that penetrates external walls. Do not attempt to clean it yet, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores.

Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow the area to breathe. Look for a musty odor and check if the wall feels cold or damp. Wipe a small spot with a paper towel dampened with diluted detergent; if the black color transfers onto the towel, it is likely mold. If it's gritty and doesn't wipe away, it could be soot or dirt.

For a confirmed or suspected case like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of water intrusion within the wall cavity, which is critical for a permanent fix. They can also take a tape-lift sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.

Until assessed, adjust your AC to a slightly higher temperature (around 22-24°C) to reduce the extreme temperature differential that causes condensation. Ensure furniture is not pressed tightly against external walls to improve air circulation.
