How to remove mold in Dubai's humidty myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture – it's a big black patch on the wall and the air feels damp. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai's humidity, and should I call a professional cleaning company or is it something I can treat myself first?

For a patch the size of a dinner plate or smaller, you can attempt to treat it yourself. First, identify and stop the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC unit's cold air hitting a warm exterior wall or a hidden plumbing leak. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. For persistent mould, a diluted white vinegar solution is effective. Dry the surface completely immediately after cleaning. A dehumidifier or running your AC continuously on dry mode is essential in this climate to prevent rapid regrowth.

If the patch is large (over one square meter), has a persistent musty odour, or the wall material itself is soft and crumbling, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing a large colony can aerosolize a high volume of spores. Given the symptoms you describe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can perform non-invasive moisture mapping to find the true extent of the problem and conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mould species, which is critical for assessing health risks and proper remediation. In many cases, the visible patch is only a fraction of the problem hidden within the wall cavity.

The Dubai climate means mould can return within days if the underlying humidity issue is not solved. A reputable company will not just clean the mould but will diagnose and correct the moisture source, which is the only long-term solution.
