Best way to remove bathroom mold in JVC apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed these black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles, especially behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. The bathroom has no window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak, so I guess the moisture never really dries out properly. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this mold and stop it from coming back?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common in JVC apartments due to high humidity and poor ventilation. For surface-level growth, a chlorine-based mold remover (like Domestos or a local brand) applied directly to the grout will kill the active growth. Leave it on for the recommended time before scrubbing.

However, killing the surface mold is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't addressed. The weak exhaust fan and constant dampness mean the mold will almost certainly return. Run the fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Consider a small desiccant dehumidifier for the room to pull excess moisture from the air, which is more effective than the fan alone in a windowless bathroom.

If the mold has a fuzzy texture, penetrates deeply into the grout, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, the growth may be more extensive than it appears. In these cases, a professional inspection can identify if there's hidden moisture within the walls or behind the tiles. For rentals, this is also important for documenting the issue with your building management, as structural ventilation problems are typically the landlord's responsibility to rectify.
