How to handle black mold in bedroom closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management first?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai, mold on an exterior wall often indicates condensation from the AC meeting the humid outdoor air, or a potential leak. Move everything away from the wall to allow it to dry completely.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a diluted detergent solution. Avoid bleach; it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the root structure in porous materials like drywall.

After cleaning, let the area dry thoroughly. Use a fan or dehumidifier to help, especially during the more humid summer months. The key is keeping the area dry; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

However, since it's on an exterior wall and has returned after two years, the underlying cause is likely persistent. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify if there's a hidden leak in the wall or inadequate insulation causing condensation. They can also perform air and surface sampling to confirm the mold type, as some black molds can be more problematic for health. For rental properties, you should also notify building management, as resolving a structural issue like this is typically their responsibility.
