How to remove mold from a humid villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the clothes and shoes stored at the back. It’s been getting worse over the last few weeks since the weather got more humid. I’m worried about it spreading and ruining more of our stuff. What’s the most effective way to treat the existing mold and prevent it from coming back in a built-in closet like this?

The damp smell indicates active mold growth, which is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls. The first step is to remove all affected items – clothes and shoes – for separate cleaning to prevent spore spread.

For the closet itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub all interior surfaces with a solution of detergent and warm water, then follow with a disinfectant like diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Avoid mixing chemicals. Completely dry the area with fans before returning any items. This is a surface-level treatment; it addresses visible growth but not the root cause.

Preventing its return is critical. Mold thrives on humidity and organic material (like cotton or leather). The closet likely has poor air circulation, allowing condensation to form. Leave the closet doors open periodically to let your home's AC air circulate. Consider using a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet to control moisture. Ensure no plumbing leaks are behind the walls.

For a built-in closet where the smell is strong and persistent, the mold may be growing within the wall or under the flooring. In such cases, a professional inspection with a borescope and moisture meter is needed to assess the extent of the problem. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species and provide a targeted removal protocol to ensure it doesn't return.
