Mold on damp wall: DIY bleach or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing on the wall behind the wardrobe in our bedroom, which feels a bit damp. I'm worried it's gotten worse since last week's humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai to check for hidden problems?

In Dubai's climate, that dampness behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation or a slow leak, exacerbated by high humidity. Bleach is a temporary fix that only removes surface colour, not the root structure of the mould. It also fails on porous surfaces like drywall and can release harmful fumes, especially in a poorly ventilated bedroom.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself with a dedicated mould remover or a vinegar solution, but you must address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe, dry the area thoroughly with a fan, and improve air circulation. However, since you mention it's growing and the wall feels damp, there is a high likelihood of a larger hidden problem within the wall cavity, especially if it's an exterior wall experiencing condensation from the AC.

Professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source and extent of the water intrusion, which is almost always more widespread than what's visible. In the UAE, remediation must follow strict guidelines to prevent cross-contamination. A proper inspection includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species, which determines the required remediation protocol. This lab analysis is crucial, as some species common in humid climates require more aggressive containment. DIY efforts often disturb the mould, causing spores to spread to other areas of the home.
