Removing black mold with kids: DIY or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. The wall feels damp and the area has a really strong, earthy smell. What's the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we just call a professional company right away?

Black mold behind furniture on a damp wall with a strong smell and child health symptoms warrants professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, this suggests a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation or a hidden leak, that simple cleaning won't resolve.

For your children's safety, do not attempt a significant DIY removal. Disturbing the mold releases spores that can exacerbate respiratory issues. A professional inspection is crucial to identify the moisture source—it could be a leaking pipe in the wall, AC condensation drain issues, or humidity from inadequate ventilation. They will use moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation depth.

Effective remediation involves more than surface cleaning; it requires fixing the water problem, safely containing and removing affected porous materials like drywall, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Reputable firms follow IICRC standards for containment to prevent cross-contamination.

After remediation, request post-clearance testing to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a safe, background level. This provides documented assurance the environment is healthy again. For immediate relief, improve air circulation in the room and keep the children out until the issue is professionally addressed.
