Found black mold from AC leak; health risk for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our living room in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner, probably from a slow AC leak I hadn't noticed. We’re all getting headaches now too. Has anyone dealt with this and did your family's health improve after getting it removed?

Black mold from an AC leak is a significant health concern, especially for children. The constant coughing and headaches you describe are common reactions to mold exposure, which can irritate the respiratory system and worsen allergies. In Dubai's humid climate, mold can grow rapidly from a small, unnoticed leak, and the year-round use of AC can spread spores throughout your home.

For a case this serious, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg, as mold can spread inside walls and under flooring. A proper assessment identifies the full extent and the specific type of mold, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In many cases, families see a marked improvement in symptoms like coughing and headaches after a thorough, professional remediation that addresses the source of the moisture, removes the contaminated materials, and cleans the air.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the problem worse. Focus on immediate steps: restrict access to the area, improve ventilation by opening windows if outdoor humidity is low, and have the AC unit and drain line inspected for the source of the leak. The remediation process should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold, which focuses on containment and proper removal to prevent cross-contamination. Verifying that the company uses independent third-party lab testing for both the initial identification and a final clearance test is the best way to ensure the job was done correctly and your home is safe.
