Black mold behind wardrobe: remove myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean. It’s been so humid lately that the walls almost feel damp. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I call our building management first?

The damp walls and black spots behind the wardrobe are classic signs of condensation mould, extremely common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating cold surfaces. For your family's health, especially with kids coughing, this needs immediate action.
First, call your building management. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for investigating and fixing the source of the moisture, which is likely a leak in the external wall or a pipe, or severe thermal bridging. They must address this structural issue; simply cleaning the mould yourself will result in it returning. While waiting for their assessment, you can clean small, visible patches (under 1 square meter) with a solution of detergent and water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. However, this is a temporary measure. The mould you see is often just the surface growth; the hyphae (roots) can penetrate porous materials like drywall. Given the symptoms and the hidden nature of the problem, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the dampness and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is crucial to understand the health risk and to verify for management that it is a building issue, not just a lack of ventilation. Proper remediation involves removing affected materials, treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and ensuring the moisture source is permanently sealed. |
