How to treat and prevent recurring damp wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom of our villa in Jumeirah has started showing these black spots, and it feels damp to the touch. We first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, but it's definitely getting worse, especially after running the AC all day. I'm worried it's spreading inside the wall. What is the most effective way to treat this and what should we do to stop the moisture from coming back for good?

The damp wall behind your wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue, often caused by condensation from your AC unit meeting the warm villa wall. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. For a permanent fix, you'll need to address both the visible mold and the hidden cause.
Immediately move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. The mold must be removed, but simply wiping it can release harmful spores into your bedroom. For a surface-level issue, a solution of white vinegar or a specialized mold cleaner can be effective; always wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, since the wall feels damp and it's spreading, the mold is likely growing within the wall cavity itself. This requires professional remediation to safely remove affected materials, contain the area, and eradicate the root colony. To prevent recurrence, the condensation point must be eliminated. This typically involves improving wall insulation to prevent the cold AC air from creating condensation on the warmer internal wall surface—a common problem in villas. Also, ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drainage line is completely clear and flowing correctly, as a blocked drain line can cause excess moisture. Keeping the AC running consistently, even at a higher temperature when out, helps maintain stable humidity levels and reduces condensation cycles. For a case with dampness inside the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and provide a targeted solution for the structure of your home. |
