Safe DIY mold removal for family with coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Jumeirah apartment and found a bunch of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. This has probably been there since the last major humidity spike a couple of months ago. What’s the safest way to get rid of this mold myself without exposing my family to harmful chemicals?

Black mold under silicone sealant is common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY removal is possible with proper safety precautions.

First, isolate the area. Keep children and pets out, close the bathroom door, and open a window if possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. The goal is to prevent inhaling or spreading spores. Do not attempt this if anyone has a compromised immune system or severe asthma.

Scrape out all the moldy silicone sealant with a putty knife and discard it in a sealed bag. The underlying surface must be completely dry. Use a fan or dehumidifier for several hours. Wipe the area with undiluted white vinegar, which is effective against many common household molds and is less harsh than bleach. Let it sit for an hour before rinsing with water and drying thoroughly.

Only reapply new, high-quality mold-resistant silicone sealant once the area is bone dry. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower to manage humidity.

Given the pre-existing coughing, a DIY fix may not address the full problem. Mold behind walls is common when it's visible under sealant. For family safety, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the specific mold type and confirm the remediation was successful, especially in a child's home.
