Safest DIY way to remove black mold from bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I've just spotted a patch of black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom where the shower meets the ceiling. It's been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. What's the safest way to get rid of this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Start with a vinegar solution (white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water) or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Spray it on the mold patch, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

In Dubai's humidity, ventilation is critical. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the door open to allow moisture to escape. If the mold is larger than a square foot, is recurring quickly after cleaning, or is inside the wall or ceiling, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source and assess the extent. For families with respiratory symptoms, identifying the mold species through lab testing can clarify the health risk.
