How to treat closet mold and use a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get a patch of black mold on the back wall. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels a bit damp, especially since we moved all our winter clothes in there. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it spreading, and should I get a dehumidifier for just that room?

That damp feeling in your closet is a classic sign of condensation, a common issue here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. The AC cools the air, but when that cold air hits warmer surfaces like an interior wall or your stored winter clothes, moisture condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

For immediate treatment, first move everything out of the closet. Wipe the mold off the wall using a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into the wall. Allow the area to dry completely. To help prevent its return, ensure there's at least a few inches of space between the back wall and your stored items to allow for air circulation.

A small portable dehumidifier for that specific room can help measurably reduce the ambient moisture level that's contributing to the problem. Look for one with a built-in hygrometer to monitor humidity, aiming to keep it below 60%.

Since the mold has already appeared on the wall, there is a possibility it has penetrated beyond the surface, especially if it's a drywall partition. For a persistent or recurring problem, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's condition and identify any hidden moisture sources. They can perform lab testing to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation is done correctly.
