How to remove black mold in Dubai myself or hire pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt a bit damp for a while, especially since the weather got more humid. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting our health. What's the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black mold in a Dubai bedroom closet is a common issue due to the high humidity, especially during summer months and in rooms with year-round AC use. The damp feeling you've noticed is a key indicator of elevated moisture levels, which mold needs to grow.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) that you've just discovered, a DIY approach may be sufficient. First, address the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC supply duct running through the closet or a lack of air circulation. Ensure the closet door is left open to allow air flow and check if the AC drain line is clear. To clean, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Allow the area to dry completely. Do not simply paint over it.

However, given that the mold is behind boxes and has likely been growing slowly, there is a possibility it has penetrated the plasterboard or wall material. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the wall feels soft or damp, or if the affected area is larger than it first appears, professional assessment is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold within walls is a frequent problem.

A professional remediation company with its own microbiology lab can identify the species and its potential health risks through testing. They use containment barriers and industrial air scrubbers to prevent spores from spreading to other areas of your home, like your clothes, during the removal process. Their methods are designed to address the root moisture problem and remove the mold colony, not just its visible surface stain. For a bedroom, where you spend many hours, this thorough approach is often the most effective for long-term indoor health.
