How to remove damp smell from Jumeirah apartment closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it's just getting worse, even though we keep the AC running. What's the best way to get rid of the existing mold smell and what can I do to stop it from coming back in this specific spot?

That damp, musty smell in your Jumeirah closet is a classic indicator of mold growth, likely thriving on the organic materials in your leather goods. The high humidity here, combined with a cool closet wall that may be a condensation point from your AC, creates a perfect environment for it.

First, remove all items from the closet. Wipe down leather bags and shoes with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water; vinegar is effective at neutralizing mold odors. For the closet itself, mix a solution of one part bleach to ten parts water and thoroughly wipe all surfaces – walls, shelves, and the floor. Ensure the area is completely dry before returning anything. Never mix bleach with other cleaners.

To stop it from returning, you must control the moisture. This is a common issue in Dubai where AC units can create cold spots that condensate. Leave the closet door open periodically to allow air circulation from the room's AC to dehumidify the space. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel packs inside the closet to absorb ambient moisture.

If the smell persists after cleaning or you see visible mold growth, the source may be hidden. In many apartments, the issue is a small leak in a pipe behind the wall or inadequate insulation causing constant condensation. A professional inspection using a borescope can identify these hidden moisture sources without invasive demolition. Verifiable lab testing of the air or a surface sample can also confirm the mold type and guide the most effective remediation strategy.
