Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional treatment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold on the back wall of the master bedroom closet, which is on the interior wall facing the bathroom. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading because my allergies have been acting up. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach or should I call a professional company for an inspection, and what’s the typical cost range for a small job like this in Dubai?

Black mold on an interior wall facing a bathroom is a common issue in Dubai villas, often caused by high humidity from showers seeping through grout or small cracks, combined with our year-round AC use creating condensation. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the moisture source or the mold's root structure inside the wall.

For a patch you describe as "big," a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible spot is often just the tip of the iceberg, with more growth inside the wall cavity. An inspector will use a moisture meter to find the exact source of water intrusion and may recommend an air or tape-lift sample sent to a microbiology lab to confirm the species, as some types like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") require more stringent containment during removal.

DIY attempts can inadvertently release a large number of spores into your home, worsening allergy symptoms. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing affected porous materials like drywall or insulation, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air.

The cost for a job like this is not typically fixed due to the unknown scope behind the wall. You should expect to pay for the initial inspection and testing first, which will define the remediation scope. For a small, contained area, the final cost is often driven by the extent of demolition and reconstruction needed after the mold is removed, not just the cleaning itself. Always request a detailed assessment and a scope of work from a certified provider before proceeding.
