Can I remove black mold from grout myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom has started turning black, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just fades a little but comes right back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

For superficial surface mold on grout, a DIY approach can be effective, but your situation with recurring growth suggests a deeper issue common in Dubai's high humidity. Persistent mold that returns after bleaching usually indicates it has penetrated below the surface or that the underlying moisture source hasn't been addressed.

Start by trying a dedicated grout mold remover, not just bleach. Bleach only lightens the surface temporarily and doesn't kill the roots embedded in the porous material. Apply a commercial mold-removing gel or paste, allow it to dwell for the recommended time, and scrub with a stiff brush. For severe cases, you may need to carefully scrape out the top layer of compromised grout before reapplying a mold-inhibiting sealant.

The critical step is controlling the humidity that fuels it. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and grout lines with a squeegee to remove standing water. In many Dubai bathrooms, the AC system may not adequately dehumidify the space, allowing condensation to form.

If the mold returns after a thorough DIY cleaning and humidity control, the growth is likely extensive behind the tiles or in the wall cavity. At that point, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the hidden extent and identify the precise moisture source, as improper remediation can spread spores. Companies with microbiology labs can test to confirm the species, which dictates the required remediation protocol.
