Could bedroom mold cause headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been worse since the humidity kicked in last month, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. Could this mold be the reason he's feeling so unwell?

Yes, bedroom mold can absolutely cause headaches and a stuffy nose, especially in Dubai's climate. The high humidity we've experienced recently creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in poorly ventilated areas like behind furniture. The symptoms your husband is experiencing are very common reactions to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released into the air.

In many cases, these symptoms are the body's inflammatory response to the irritants. The confined space of a bedroom, combined with hours of exposure during sleep, significantly increases the likelihood of such reactions. The wall behind a wardrobe is a classic problem spot, as it traps moisture and lacks air circulation, allowing the mold you've seen to thrive.

For a situation like this, where visible growth is spreading and correlating with health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC units or seepage—and assess the extent of the problem, sometimes finding hidden growth inside wall cavities. They typically use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to do this. The most definitive step is lab analysis of a tape-lift or air sample, which identifies the exact mold species and helps gauge the potential health risk.

Until you can get an assessment, improve ventilation in the room by periodically moving the wardrobe away from the wall and using a dehumidifier. Avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release a large number of spores. Addressing the root cause of the moisture is essential; otherwise, the mold will almost certainly return even after cleaning.
