Child-safe way to remove black mold in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’m starting to worry it’s because of the black mold spots I’ve found in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been so humid lately that the grout between the tiles never seems to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What’s the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to our high humidity, and it can definitely irritate children's respiratory systems, causing coughing or worsening allergies. The key to removal is addressing the moisture source first.

For small surface areas, a simple and child-safe method is to use undiluted white vinegar. Spray it directly onto the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with water. The vinegar smell dissipates quickly and it's far less harsh than bleach. For persistent mold in grout, a paste made from baking soda and water can be used as an abrasive scrub. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning, and ensure the room is well-ventilated.

However, these methods only remove surface mold. If the grout never fully dries, the mold's root structure (hyphae) is likely growing deep within the porous material. In this case, scrubbing will only provide a temporary fix. The long-term solution requires improving ventilation. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and consider using a portable dehumidifier. If the fan is old or weak, it may not be moving enough air; upgrading to a higher-capacity model is often necessary.

If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), keeps returning despite thorough cleaning, or if the coughing persists, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact species and the extent of the moisture issue, which is critical for your family's health. In severe cases, grout may need to be removed and replaced to fully eradicate the problem.
