Safest DIY black mold removal method for kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I’ve just discovered patches of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah, and I think it might have started after that really humid spell we had a few weeks ago. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mold in a child's bedroom requires careful handling. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can manage it yourself with strict safety precautions. First, isolate the area by sealing the closet and room doors with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from spreading. Ensure the room is well-ventilated by opening a window.

Wear an N95 respirator mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the moldy surface with a spray bottle, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Do not mix bleach with other cleaners. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and place all used materials in a sealed bag for disposal.

The root cause is almost always moisture. In Dubai's climate, this is frequently due to condensation from AC units or high indoor humidity. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or ensure your AC is running efficiently to keep the room's humidity below 60%. Check for and fix any leaks in the room or adjacent bathroom.

For any patch larger than a square meter, or if the mold returns quickly, this indicates a deeper issue that requires professional assessment. DIY methods only address surface growth, not the moisture source or spores within walls. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden cause. In villas, a common source is a small roof leak or compromised external wall insulation from the humid spell.
