How to remove black mold and is it a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been really humid the last few weeks. What's the best way to get rid of it for good, and should I be worried about my family's health?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to the high humidity and temperature differential between the hot outside air and your cooled indoor space. This is a very common issue in Dubai homes.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Dry it thoroughly immediately after. The health risk for most healthy adults is low, typically causing allergy-like symptoms such as congestion or irritation. However, risk increases for infants, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or compromised immunity. To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. This is often inadequate insulation in the external wall creating a cold spot where condensation forms. Improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar or using a small desiccant dehumidifier. Store clothes in airtight vacuum bags during the humid season. For recurring mold, a patch larger than one square foot, or if anyone in the household is experiencing persistent respiratory issues, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a thermal camera to identify the exact cold spot and moisture source. A lab test can also confirm the mold species, which is the only way to know the specific health risks, as "black mold" is a broad term covering many types. |
