Can I remove Jumeirah bedroom mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It must have been growing behind our shoe rack for a while because the wall feels damp and the smell is really strong. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution from Spinneys, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface that you've caught early, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. However, the damp wall and strong smell you describe suggest a more serious moisture issue, likely from condensation or a slow leak, which is common in Jumeirah's humid climate where AC systems run constantly.

First, move the shoe rack and anything else away from the wall to allow air circulation. Wipe the visible mold with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a disinfectant. Vinegar can work for very minor cases, but it's often insufficient for the strains common here. Crucially, you must identify and stop the moisture source. Feel for cool spots on the wall indicating condensation from an AC pipe in the void space or a poorly insulated exterior wall.

Given the dampness and persistent odour, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water that DIY methods will miss. If the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster behind the surface, the material likely needs to be removed and replaced. For remediation, look for a provider that follows IICRC standards and can provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is truly remediated, not just cleaned cosmetically.
