Safely clean mold from humid storage room myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and found a whole section of the back wall covered in this fuzzy black and green stuff. It’s been so humid since the weather changed. What is the safest way to clean this up myself without putting my family at risk?

Black mold growth in humid storage rooms is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially after the weather shift when ACs aren't drying the air as effectively. For your family's safety, the priority is to contain the spores and identify the moisture source.

First, do not disturb it. Isolate the area by closing the door and sealing the gap with tape if possible. Ensure the room is well-ventilated by opening a window, but do not use the villa's central AC as it could spread spores. The moisture source is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the cool villa and the humid outdoor air, or a minor, unnoticed leak.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with precautions. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—do not use bleach as it only lightens the color and doesn't kill the roots. Lightly mist the moldy area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then wipe it away with disposable cloths. Place all cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal.

However, given the location on a wall and your children's persistent coughing, this suggests a larger underlying issue. The wall cavity behind may be extensively contaminated, which is not a DIY job. Disturbing it improperly risks significant cross-contamination. The safest course is a professional inspection to assess the full extent with a borescope and moisture meter. They can also perform air quality testing to see if spores have spread into your living areas, which is a likely culprit for the respiratory irritation. In Dubai's climate, solving the humidity problem with a dehumidifier or adjusting the AC is essential to prevent immediate recurrence.
