How to remove and prevent mold in seaside closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a faint, damp smell, especially on the outer wall that faces the sea. I just pulled out my winter sweaters and found a few small black speckled patches on the back wall behind the clothes. We had that really humid spell a couple of weeks ago and I’m worried it’s taken hold. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in seaside closets is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and salt-laden air, which promotes condensation on cooler interior walls. For the small patches you've described, you can clean it yourself safely.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Lightly spray the affected area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can actually feed the root structure of the mold embedded in porous materials like drywall. Allow the area to dry completely; a fan can help. Discard any clothes that have mold growth directly on them.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. This wall is likely colder than the room's dew point, causing condensation. First, ensure your AC is running consistently, even when you're out, to maintain a low indoor humidity level (ideally below 60%). Leave some space between your clothes and the outer wall to improve air circulation. A renewable desiccant dehumidifier, like those filled with calcium chloride crystals, placed inside the closet can be very effective at capturing excess moisture. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional assess the wall's insulation, as improved thermal breaks can prevent the condensation from forming in the first place.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the species and any hidden moisture sources within the wall cavity.
