Urgent to call specialist for bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black patch spreading behind the toilet paper holder after the recent humidity. Given how quickly it's appearing, is this something I need to call a specialist for urgently this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mould in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity, but its rapid spread behind a wall fixture alongside your children's coughing warrants immediate attention. This suggests moisture is trapped within the wall cavity, not just on the surface, which can indicate a more significant issue.

For a patch that appeared quickly and is potentially causing respiratory symptoms, I would recommend a professional inspection this week. The priority is to determine the extent of the mould behind the surface and identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, failed grout, or condensation from AC ducts running in the wall. Surface cleaning will not solve a deeper problem.

Until you can get it assessed, increase bathroom ventilation: run the exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers, and keep the bathroom door open to reduce humidity. Wipe down wet surfaces and ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to minimise condensation. Limit your children's exposure to the area.

A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall. If the mould is extensive or the species is a concern (like Stachybotrys, which thrives in constant moisture), remediation by a specialist who uses containment and HEPA filtration is necessary to prevent spores from spreading during cleanup. For smaller, confirmed surface mould, a thorough cleaning with appropriate products can be effective. The key is a proper diagnosis first.
