Black mold in closet: call pro or assess myself first?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. I'm really worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the first step I should take—should I call a professional for a proper inspection or is there a way to assess this myself first?

Given the location on an exterior wall and the timing with high humidity, this is likely a condensation issue that has created an ideal environment for mould. The first step is to assess the extent yourself safely.
Do not touch the spots. Put on a simple mask and gloves. Carefully move the clothes away from the wall. Check if the mould is only on the surface paint or if it has penetrated through to the wallboard or plaster underneath. A small, surface-level patch might be manageable, but any sign of deeper growth or a musty smell indicates a larger problem. In Dubai's climate, mould behind walls is common due to thermal bridging, where the cold from the AC meets the outside heat, creating constant condensation you cannot see. For any growth larger than a square foot, or if it's recurring, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY assessments often miss the hidden moisture source. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact point of condensation within the wall cavity and identify the mould species. This is critical, as the remediation approach for Cladosporium (common on damp windows) differs from that for Aspergillus (which can indicate a chronic leak). Proper identification, often through lab analysis of a tape lift sample, is the only way to know the actual risk and correct removal protocol. |
