How to permanently remove mold in Sharjah apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I keep finding in the corners of their bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing behind the wardrobe after the recent humidity. I wipe it away with vinegar but it always comes back within a week. What's the most effective long-term solution to kill the mold and prevent it from returning in a Sharjah apartment?

The recurring mold behind the wardrobe points to a persistent moisture source, likely condensation from your AC unit or a small leak in the building envelope. In Sharjah's climate, high humidity combined with cool wall surfaces from constant AC use creates perfect conditions for mold to regrow after surface cleaning.

Vinegar only addresses surface spores and will not kill the root structure (hyphae) growing within the porous wall material. For a long-term solution, you must first identify and stop the moisture source. Move the wardrobe and inspect the wall and floor for any dampness or cracks. Check if your AC drain line is clogged or if the unit is causing excessive condensation on that wall.

Professionally, the wall should be treated with an EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not a household product, to penetrate and kill the mold at its root. After treatment, any stained or compromised plaster should be removed and replaced with mold-resistant paint. Improving air circulation in that corner is critical; keep furniture several inches away from walls to allow air to flow. A standalone dehumidifier can help, but addressing the AC's performance and the building's moisture intrusion is the permanent fix.

Given the health symptoms and the mold's rapid recurrence, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the wall's moisture content and identify any hidden issues. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is important information if your children's symptoms persist.
