Is dangerous mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a bunch of old winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in our villa in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the back wall. We’ve stored suitcases and my son’s sports equipment in there for years. Is this the kind of mold that is seriously dangerous, and what’s the first thing I should do to clean it safely with my family here?

Black mold in a Dubai villa's storage area is a legitimate health concern, especially with the symptoms you've described. The high humidity here, combined with condensation from AC ducts often running through such spaces, creates a perfect environment for mold growth. The persistent cough in your kids is a common reaction to mold spores, as children are more sensitive to the irritants and allergens they release.

The first step is to isolate the area immediately. Keep the cupboard closed and ensure your children do not go near it. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products, as this can aerosolize a massive amount of spores and make the situation much worse throughout your home.

You need a professional inspection. The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, but many other black-colored molds are less harmful. Only a lab analysis of a properly collected sample can identify the specific species and the actual risk level. A certified inspector will also use moisture meters to find the water source—often a hidden condensation leak from AC insulation or a minor pipe seepage—that must be fixed first, or the mold will return.

For remediation, the Dubai Municipality has guidelines for safe removal, which professionals follow. This involves sealing the area with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration to scrub the air, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like drywall and those stored items. Once the source is fixed and the mold is professionally removed, air quality testing is the only way to verify the space is safe again. Given your children's symptoms, this is a case where professional assessment and remediation are strongly advised.
